Background
On October 5th 2024, the VAC partnered with our fellow board member and Junior Vice Commander Richard Alcala to help raise funds for a community project he is helping lead, the Indigenous & Latino Heritage Mural Project at Southside Park in Sacramento, CA. Local artists collaborated to create designs that would be painted on the back walls on the parks amphitheater, complementing an existing painted mural on the other side of the building completed by the Royal Chicano Air Force. Of the 14 remaining panels on the other side of the building that are to be painted, community leaders in the Hispanic community are being featured, such as Cesar Chavez and astronaut Jose Hernandez, among many others as mentioned below, some of which overlap our veteran and first responder communities. The fundraiser was paired with festivities including indigenous tribes and Aztec dancing, and guest speakers ranging from local politicians and dignitaries voicing their support. This year, we invite you to please participate again to help support this vision on July 19th from 6-10pm. See flyer for details, and we hope to see you there.
